MUARC January Meeting - guest speaker John MI0DFG.

John (MI0DFG) was guest speaker at our January meeting and delivered a very interesting presentation based around his experiences of Amateur Radio in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and the need to build homebrew equipment.

The talk was much appreciated by Club Members and visiting guests, some of whom had travelled quite some distance to hear John and to see his display of HB radio equipment.

Saturday 23rd June 2012 - Official Shack Opening

It was an early start today for the setup crew, Due to extremely wet weather we had been unable to begin setting up on Friday evening. Instead, we arrived at 6.30am to begin preparation for the official opening of the shack, which we have been looking forward to for some time.

We were privleged to have the Mayor of Craigavon, Carla Lockhart attend for the opening ceremony.

There was a good turnout, and thankfully the weather stayed dry for most of the day.

The ribbon was cut, and the shack is now officially open for use by all members.

Foundation Passes 16th June 2012

We would like to congratulate Paul, William and Leo on their recent Foundation license exam pass - we also look forward to hearing the new callsigns on the air soon :-)
Great work guys!

Tuesday 5th June 2012 - Olympic Torch

Unfortunately Tuesday was very wet, however the exhibition trailer was mobilized nonetheless with our primary goal being to promote amateur radio in the local community

Our thanks go to Craigavon Borough Council for their encouragement and assistance in enabling our club to be a part of the torch relay celebrations.

1st Photo below taken during setup, later in the day the rain got harder, but it didn't dampen the spirits of those who had turned out to see the torch - there was a real carnival atmosphere.

 Saturday 2nd June 2012 - Lurgan Show

Unfortunately due to the high number of large motors and generators running at this event we were limited to several bands. Also, a recent solar flare meant that conditions were pretty poor.
A good day was had by all, regardless of radio conditions. WX was good and our main objective of promoting amateur radio was achieved with quite a lot of interest being shown by passers by.
Thanks to everyone who helped to make the day run smoothly.

Activation Report: Saturday 21st April 2012

The morning started very wet indeed, however very quickly the rain cleared. By 8.30 we were departing for the short drive to Navan Fort, arriving at 9am we had the carpark to ourselves.

Setting up seemed to take no time at all, with the radios being switched on at 12.20pm and shortly after Brian, Mi0TGO making the first (and the furthest of the weekend) QSO with Takar, JA7BXS in Japan on 17 metres.

Throughout the weekend we were visited by various members and had guests from as far afield as GW0NVN (Simon) from Bristol.

HF conditions were good, with one of the rarest stations heard being a WH4 from the Midway Islands.

As the barbeque cooled the rain started, but luckily it didn't last long and we had a clear sky to see a pass of the International Space Station. Davy Mi0IRZ heard PI9ISS making a CQ call but unfortunately the Space Station was too close to the horizon and the signal faded before he managed to make contact.

Sunday 22nd April 2012

The ice covered generator was fired up at around 6.45am on Sunday morning and a few more contacts made before a very well deserved cooked breakfast was served by Davy Mi0IRZ

We filled a few more pages in the logbook before closing down, packing away the station and preparing for the monthly meeting.

Most notable stations of the weekend were: JA7BXS (17m) 5B/M0VKY (12m) ZS1ZC (10m) CN8YAN (12m) CO8LY (17m) and OD5NH (10m)

Thanks to those who turned up to help set up and take down all the kit, and those who visited during the weekend.

The members gather for our monthly club meeting afterwards
