Here you can see, and read a bit about, who's who in the club - There's not enough space to include everyone at the same time - but over the next few months most people will have been featured.

************************

Jimmy Lappin (GI0OND)

MUARC CHAIRMAN

Jimmy joined the RSGB back in 1959 - he was  present at the inaugural meeting of what was then known as the Mid-Ulster RSGB Group, which took place in the office block of the disused Tavanagh Weaving Co. factory on the Armagh Road in Portadown, on the 15th October 1965.

He acquired his licence in the mid 1980's and during his time as a member of the MUARC held office as Secretary for two periods, each of which was for four years, and had responsibility for the rallies which were held in the Silverwood Hotel, Craigavon.

At the AGM on 14Th September 2008 Jimmy was elected as  Chairman of our Club.

Jimmy can be heard on HF using his Kenwood TS930SAT up to a full-size G5RV (VERY high!), and on 2M using his Icom 28E up to a Diamond 7/8th wave antenna.

Stephen Murray (2I0SGM)

MUARC VICE CHAIRMAN

Steve gained his Foundation Licence through the MUARC in December 2005 and wasted no time in setting up his station - he has wide experience using computer and communication equipment.  Steve's impressive station is based around a Yaesu FT-847 allband and a Kenwood ts-530s up to a TGM MQ-34SR fourband Hybrid Quad 3 element beam which is on a 40ft extendable tower with a Yaesu G-450 rotator. Also has a Comet CHA 250B and a Doublet. For 2M he uses a Diamond 510 Co-linear.

Davy Gregg (MI3IRZ)

MUARC TREASURER

Davy gained his Foundation Licence through the MUARC in February 2005 and is currently the Club Treasurer. Davy is a very active member of the Club and is keen to get out and about doing mobile work and field events. He is involved in fundraising activities, both inside and outside the Club, and devotes a lot of his time to charity work. He was heavily involved with the 'Awards For All' Lottery Fund application which saw the Club being awarded £4550 in 2006. For HF work Davy uses an Icom 718 up to a Trapped Dipole - for 2M he has a Yaesu 7800e up to a Watson Tri-bander.

Bobby Wadey (MI3RWG)

MUARC SECRETARY

Bobby was a short wave listener for several years before gaining her Foundation Licence through the MUARC in December 2006.

Very much into art, she is currently on a BTEC Foundation Art & Design course which will lead to her doing a B.A. in Applied Fine Arts & Design, after which she will major in silversmithing and jewellery.

Bobby can be heard on 2M using a Trio TS700 up to a j-beam.

Betty Crozier (MI3LXJ)

MUARC VICE TREASURER

Betty was a short wave listener from about 1977 before gaining her Foundation Licence through the MUARC - she is one of  three female members of the Club.

At the AGM on the 8th September 2007 Betty was elected as Vice Treasurer of our Club.

Betty's QTH is quite high which lends itself to easier 2M work, for which she has a Trio TS711E up to a Watson Co-linear antenna. For HF Betty has an FT920 up to a G5RV.

John McCullough (GI4BQI)

John acquired his first Licence in February 1951 - this was a First Class PMG Licence issued to Radio Officers of the Merchant Navy - in which John served for many years.

Upon completion of his service John moved to Africa, and in 1968 on the strength of his long held PMG Licence, he was issued with the Zambian callsign 9J2MC.

When he returned to Northern Ireland in 1973 John was issued with his current callsign (GI4BQI).

John is one of the Club's highly experienced members and  can be heard at our field events using CW - a mode of which he is very fond, and in which he is regarded as an expert - not surprisingly, since the PMG Licence required CW at 25 words per minute with no errors! He  can be heard on HF using his Icom 756mk3 through his home-made ATU up to a Doublet antenna.

Norman Foote (GI4MNF)

Norman gained his Class A Licence in 1981 and joined the MUARC shortly afterwards in the days when it met in Gilford.

He is one of our very experienced operators and in his station he has, for HF work, a Kenwood TS850S AT up to a 3 element Yagi above his mast and rotator - and for 2M he can be heard using his Icom 251E up to a Watson Co-linear.

He has a strong interest in Echo Link and  has many QSL cards from as far away as Australia, Tasmania, South Korea, Florida, California, New Zealand and New Guinea.

For HF work Martin uses a Kenwood TS-b2000 running through the Kenwood RS2000 head unit, with an MFJ993b ATU and a Kenwood MC60 microphone. The system runs through the ARCP-2000 radio control programme and  goes up to a Carolina Windom 80 Special.

For 2M work Martin has a Trio TS700 multi-band  up to a j-beam antenna.

Melvyn Crozier (2I0FUT)

Melvyn was a shortwave listener from the mid 70's before gaining his Foundation Licence in 2004. He has an interest in vintage and valve radios and has an interesting collection of equipment.

Melvyn's QTH is quite high, which lends itself to 2M work, for which he can be heard using his Trio TS711E up to a Watson Co-Linear.

For HF work Melvyn uses his FT920 up to a full size G5RV.

John McCabe (GI0KUH)

John was a short wave listener from about 1967 - licenced in the early 1980's he spent many years working CW all round the world. John has been a member of the MUARC for about 25 years During his time as Chairman of the Club John oversaw an increase in membership of the Club, a change of QTH, and has brought many people into the hobby as Foundation Licence holders in his capacity as an RSGB recognised Tutor for all Licence levels. John's main interest in Amateur Radio is HF - and for this he uses a Kenwood 530s up to a full size G5RV for HF work.

Chris Blake (MI1EQI)

Chris has been licenced since February 2000. He has had a lifelong interest in radios and TV - at school he was always being given radios to fix by teachers. Chris has an interest in renovating valve and vintage radio equipment and has quite a collection of gear.

He can be heard using a Yaesu FT107M for HF work up to a full-size G5RV. And for 2M he uses a TR7000 up to a home-made slim jim - for 4M work he uses an Ascom SE550 up to a folded di-pole.

***********************************

Mickey McGrory (2I0BIW)

Mickey was an SWL for about 15 years before gaining his Foundation Licence in March 2005 with the callsign MI3IYA - he is currently a member of the MUARC and got his Intermediate Licence in May 2007 through the Club.

He takes the hobby very seriously and  believes  strongly that the concept of communication through Amateur Radio should be promoted to young people for the purpose of education and self-development.

With a QTH nearly 700ft above sea level, Mickey operates HF SSB, 6M SSB, 2M/70CMS FM/SSB, PSK31 on 160,80,40,20 and 17M. He experiments with meteor scatter on 144Mhz/50Mhz using fsk441/jt65b modes with WSJT software. He is currently learning morse code and hopes to be using this mode shortly.

Working conditions are a Yaesu FT-847, Kenwood TS-480SAT, Kenwood TS-430S and a Kenwood TS-711E. For mobile work it's a Yaesu FT-7800. Antennas include a Carolina Windom 160 at 40ft, a homebrew Cobwebb at 25ft, both matched with an MFJ-993B auto ATU.

For VHF/UHF he has a Diamond V-2000 Tri-band vertical, a nine element Tonna 2M Yagi, a 5 element Tonna 6M Yagi and a 10 element 70CMS Yagi all at 35ft. He uses a Yaesu G-450XL rotator.
